help I have Tri-Z carb problems

    Hi,

I just bought a '86 Yamaha Tri-Z and it bogs when I first start out. It really only bogs in the low end. The bike is in real nice shape. It was not ridden much and sat most of its life. The reeds were just changed and the carb cleaned. Is there any adjustments I should try. Is there anywhere I can find instructions on adjusting the carburetor?

Also, the guy I bought it off was running 20:1 plus a little more. That might be part of the problem. What would you recommend to mix it at? I always ran 32:1 in my banshees and never had a problem.

    Thanks
    Bill

PS - attached is a pic of it.

Running lean is good for racing but , run it too lean and it can destroy everything , Also change the spark plug if it's bogging , cheapest and simplest if the first way to fix something.

The plug was changed too. What plus do you recommend to run?

If you don't have a manual for it getting one would be a world of help. Sometimes there on ebay and there are links on the board where you can download them and print them out. Check and see what main jet is in it. Usually when she bogs it's a sign of fuel loss. But the carb could just use cleaning. If it has sat up a while don't ride it hard for a while til you get these issues solved. That one looks good in the pic. I would try to take care of it and not rag it out. The good looking ones in oem are getting harder to find. I drove from Memphis to Peoria to pick up an 86 like that so someone else wouldn't buy it and rag it out. The red seat was still soft and ran great.
Start with you sop. Clean carb again change oil and coolant in it. Check main to see if it is still the oem size. I believe 470 was the oem size. May just need a little adjustment of the air screw on the right side or clip adjustment on the needle. On that air screw it would be might be good to take a screwdriver and slowly turn it all the way in counting the turns til she lightly bottoms and then write down what the number of turn were and then back it back out. Then you'll remember the place it was before adjustments. I believe the oem was 1 1/2 turns out. Make small adjustments. You can't get impatient about it though you may want to. Better to spend time than money. You burn that piston and you'll spend money. Read some of the posts that have been suggested. And don't let 40 other people work on it. Just some thoughts.
