    The 84 200es project

Figure we'd share our project with you all.

We're new atc nuts....well sorta, I had ridden them new, but that's been a long time ago. They weren't mine, and I already was into my 70 Honda SL350......so did not get one for myself.

So this year, I figured I'd start again with my 17 year old son. I picked up this trike advertised as a 83 200M. When we picked it up, to my pleasant surprise it was a 84 200es Big Red. It had seen much better days. Horrible paint job, rusted frame, broken parts, not running etc. The right fender had been cut for a badly welded aftermarket muffler. The headlight was barely attached, as the chrome frame had rotted away. A toggle switch was used in place of the key switch and the indicator lights were long gone. Missing parking brake and cut cable.

Here are some picts of it.

I let my son have at it. He has done a great job. Took it completely apart and cleaned and repainted the frame, engine etc. We have sealed the tank, and its ready to be painted. We have a plastic welder, and are fixing a few cracks on the fenders. All missing and broken parts have been replaced thru ebay purchases. It is nearly complete, and when painted will attach the perfect repro decals thru Harlan.
I did break down and buy the chinese carb. The original one just was not cooperating on the low speed jet, and I had enough of trying to get it right. It was full of green gunk to start with. The chinese carb works really well, and no issues here. We drained the oil and cleaned out the filter. It runs well and we've done a few test drives already.
I even found my Bell Moto 3 Helmet....well the Scott goggles are long gone...but it works!! Glad I never got rid of it.
Yeah, I spent more than I paid for it ($150), but has been well worth the experience for my son.

When done, we'll post the picts...we still have 2 85 250sx trikes to get to next.....

Lookin good. I think it's very important to teach the young folks that not everything worth owning comes from a dealer. Great job mentoring the boy! Keep us posted.

Thank you for all the kind words!

We have a plastic welder, and so far it really works great. It uses mesh melted into the plastic for stability, and use colored rod on the top side. If you use the correct plastic filler, it is a professional job.

If you think this one was interesting, wait till you see the 85 250sx we've got. It was hit in the front, bent the forks, destroyed the fender, crushed the headlight assy broke switches, perches etc. But the rest aint too bad.....

Is it possible to press the forks stright, or should I go for another set??

    Thank you

I always like seeing before and progress pictures of a rebuild. I commend you for steering a youth in the right direction. I know by allowing him to rebuild he will hopefully think twice before tearing his bike up as done frequently on you tube.

    A couple questions for you.
tell me more about the reproduction decals from harlan??????
I would also like to know about the plastic welder you referred to on the fender repairs, mfg, price, where purchased????

    Thanks
    David

    Cool 250sx welded fenders.....

The Plastic welder was purchased from urethanesupply.com.
Here are the pix of the 250sx fenders. We melted heavier guage chicken wire on the backside and then v grooved the top side and melted in the rod. They also sell the correct filler for the plastic. It works very well and is quite strong. I'm very happy with it.

Yes, it can be sanded as if it were a metal body part. I just haven't gotten it done yet.....

THe big red fenders got the same treatment. If it is a big repair, you'd have to repaint the whole thing. That's not easy given it is a plastic part

But for sure, it saves the fenders and structually they are like new.

I forgot about the decals. They are exactly correct and very well done. Well worth the money.

I would be interested in hearing more about the decals you used on the 1984 200es and possible the 250 sx. How much are they??? What all do you get???? HOW DURABLE ARE THEY????

They are a really nice reprodiction, and appear correct in every way

I think they are designed for the metal tanks, not the plastic ones. I would expect them to be as durable as the originals

Harlan is the man to see...Harlan Lysne" <hjlysne@charter.net>. He will return from vacation in April. I'll probably get the 250sx set at that time.
