    Stuck Head Pipe UPDATE: Unstuck

I recently acquired a pretty beat up 85 ATC250es Big Red from my father in law for a pretty good price (free). He used to use it at his garage to pull cars around. The head pipe was cut off when I got it so that there was only about 3 inches sticking out of the head. He gave me a cobra exhasut that he picked up somewhere to but never had a chance to put it on. I was nervous about breaking off the exhaust studs so I cut the nuts off the stud and beat the flange off. I thought I was making good progress but I can not get the head pipe off of the head. Any ideas on how to get this thing off without damaging the cylinder head?

Looks like he got the beat the cr@p out of it, part down. If you can get some thing to eat some of the rust away from the studs and then heat it up a little, tap it back and forth til it loosens. Good, glad you got it.

It's been soaking in silikroil for two days. I even made a relief cut in the flange to try to give it some room to move. I haven't tried heat yet cause I'll have to borrow a torch. I just wanted to make sure I'm not going to damage anything by beating on it. I have been putting a piece of oak up against the flange and beating the hell out of it, is this the best way or should I be using a different technique. I also stuck a piece of rag into the cylinder before I started to keep out any pieces of metal. Thanks for the help guys, I'm pretty new at this.

Got It! Went home a lunch, sprayed it with some more kroil and beat the hell out of it. I was just about to give up and go back to work, I hit it one more time and it dropped right out on the floor. I didn't think that thing was comming out. Thanks for the help. MonroeMike, thanks for that link, I searched and searched but couldn't find anything related. That one looked way worse than mine. Here is a picture of the head with the pipe removed (sorry for the quality, the good camera needs to be charged).

And just in case anyone is interested here is a picture of the Big Red. It is almost complete except for part of the rear rack, the mudflaps, and the right side cover. I'll be looking for those as soon as I get it running.

The studs were in good shape, I just cleaned up the threads. Finshed mounting the exhaust tonight. It was still early so I took off the carb, blew out the jets, put the carb back on put some fresh gas in it and she started on the forth kick. I couldn't believe it.

    Total investment so far:
    Big Red - Free
    gas - $7
dremel discs to cut off exhaust nuts $12
    Exhaust to head gasket $5
new bolt to replace the one I snapped off in the shift pedal - $.23

    Not bad for under $25

Next on the list is to change the engine and driveshaft oil, get a new air filter and grease everything up. Anything else I should check or replace considering I have no idea how this thing was taken care of in the past.

Definitely change engine oil and filter, make sure the filter goes in right or the cam journals will self destruct.
Sometimes gas will flood into the crankcase if the shutoff isn't perfect. Seen it a few times with trikes that sit for a while.

Diff oil is only like 3 point 3 OZ of hypoid gear oil, maybe 80wt.

    Double check swing arm bearings.
Not deadly critical but a real pain to fix if they get too sloppy. Maybe pop the beauty caps and hit the locknuts with some penetrant.
Service manual says to do something with them every so often but unless someone put in grease fittings, it seems like a standard bearing repack. Most people wait until they get sloppy and need to be replaced.

I usually do the minimum to make sure it has all gears etc and make sure it's worth any more effort or $$ and then do all your services, valve adjust , clean the tank to perfection, oil cables and all that other fun stuff... chase the mice out of the airbox.

I also spray or soak anything rusty looking that may have to come apart someday.

You already went thru this but I spray my exhaust studs periodically for the happy day I get to replace them.

With what? I'm not sure. Stainless with antisieze? bolts or studs.
Someone surely knows more than I.
