I was wondering if there are any pointers to get the kickstart to catch,,and the shifter to shift properly and not by hand..both side covers off and both sides look ok

You've got some post searching to do bud.
These 2 failures are very common with the 250SX and ES.
The kicker slipping is a 1 way bearing, the shifting issue can be one of a few simple fixes. Get out your manual
