83, ...185 S just picked up lastnight, good buy???

So I've been riding these little bundles
    Of joy since 8 yrs old when I got a 84 110.
I recently grabbed a mint 110 for the wife for 450.00
And only needed carb cleaned! Now I grabbed a
83, 185S runs strong, all gears solid, decent shape,
New carb, needs seat covered, and smokes like a
Chimney, white, oil smoke. So I offered 300 and got it.
Have ridden already, and feel i may get lucky and
need only rings and gaskets, or possibly valve seals.
Any thoughts on thus being a good buy?

Could be a good deal, hard to tell just by a short description. Seat covers are pretty cheep, or if you can find it get a larger seat like I did, makes a big difference on these bikes. Really depends on the engine, hopefully a good top end job will do it, no way to know till you get into it.
post some picts, we could give a better opinion on it with them.

Definitely top end job will do it, motor is complete,
And runs great, that's why I'm leaning toward valve
seals. And valves do seam a bit noisy. But if rings were
shot one would think it would run accordingly, with
little power. I will try for some pics tonight, but I can
Say it is all there, its pretty clean and seat cover is new
just done half shoddy, only real issue I found was the
presence of oil around spark plug , and between jug
And head, and in exhaust pipe.

Ah the old "just needs valve stems"......
See my quad rebuild thread here - with one of the engine's i am working with, the previous owner said that.

Coarse I got that engine in a box after they put the new seals in it's head.

You never know, check it out, with luck maybe that's all it does need. If money isn't tight I would still freshen up everything since your in there already. From the amount of oil you describe I would check it out sooner rather than later.

Already ordered the gasket set, rings, and valve seals
Going to do the topend tomorrow and if more is needed
I will surely know when I get it apart! Either way I don't
Feel like I got beat up for 300 bucks. If I can get away with
Spending 200 I would be happy! Just for running around
In the fields and trails with the Wifey... she's got the
Super clean 110, I get the fix me 185!!! But a freshened
Motor and a little cleaning it'll be great.

Wow, thanks a lot, I will update with some pics when
I figure out how, the 110 is silly clean, and I'm really
Looking forward to getting the 185 looking and running
Right! I've been reading the forums here for a while
And its a wealth of information.. I just love 3 wheeling,
As its just a great feeling, no other atv or cycle compares
    And they won't die!!
