See how much he knows about it running last time... or not since he's had it? Maybe it needs some simple adjustments and cleaning. You mentioned compression, does it have any? If not, negotiate

If it is not running $400 is too steep, at least in my area. Do not trust what the seller says on the "Last Running Date." It may have drove around the yard grinding gears, puffing white smoke, and hemorraghing oil out of all the seals, but hey it ran 2 months ago.

I live in tangiphoa parish. I'm not gonna get the bike I mentioned me doing a compression test and he started remembering it smoking a "little" last time it ran bummer though I just wanted something to cruise around at a big mud event in a few weeks. No mud riding just to get from a to b around the property with out cranking up the truck everytime.

Depending how good you are with wrenches, doing the upper end on a single cylinder engine is real easy. Depending on how clean the trike is it might be worth looking into if its work you can do. The 225DR's are pretty rare. I would love to get a hold of one.

I've never torn into internals but I do all other maintenance on my vehicles. Problem is it would have to be ready in three weeks. How much cash would it cost to rebuild the top end?

one other thing to consider is spark if the cdi goes bad on one of those it's an arm leg and left nut to replace, you might only spend 50$ or you might end up spending 300$ depends on what's wrong inside, you'd just have to look at it first

my dx smokes a little, and all I have to do is adjust the valves to fix mine, so you never know but I would talk him down to 200 if you could

Check to see it has spark, rebuilding the upper end is about $40 in a gasket kit, $20-40 for rings. If its go ok compression now and just smoked a little, usually the machine will just want rings and a valve job. You can lap your own valves but you need to either make or buy a valve spring compressor. Cheap to make, about $100 to buy. Doesn't take more than a day or two for a thorough novice to do an upper end. An afternoon once you get good at it.
