i got my 200s home, and discovered no spark, could the fact that there it no continuity in the sparkplug boot have something to do with it? should that fix the sparking problem when i replace it?

Depends if the coil is good.......
If the end of the plug boot has no continuity to the coil, that wire/boot could be the issue.
Check your wiring diagram in the service manual!

i unscrewed the boot and checked it seperatly
I had the same problem with my 1984 ATC 200S. If you have no spark out of the coil, its time to replace it. Expecially if it has never been replaced. heres the same one i got. mine works fine now.

I've actually stuck a piece of copper wire into the coil wire to bypass the screwcap and
wrapped it around the plug just to hear it run.
Looks stupid, probably dangerous and not recommended.
Another common related issue is that the last tiny bit of the coil
wire can corrode and not allow spark to get thru a GOOD/new cap.
So trimming the coil wire off about the thickness of a matchbook somehow gives enough
clean internal wire to get a bite with the cap screw

ok. i removed the coil, and i checked for continuity between ground and the blade connector, and there was, so im assuming its good???
i also cleaned ground. il check for spark when i get home. i cant wait to ride this thing.....
Make sure your fuse in the plastic head on the spark plug isnt blown or isnt getting connection. both of which would stop it from running right.
9 times out of 10 its the stator thats bad on these bikes .

ignition coil is my bet
can yall tell me witch is the stator and witch is the ign coil and how to test them? i have mech experience but im new to atc's
i also replaced the spark plug boot and tested everything for continuity (still no spark). everything is getting continuity expt whatever is under the flywheel.
i cant wait to ride this thing!!!!
The stator is under the flywheel
Here is the manual for the 200S

I have a 82 200 with the same issue, the stator went twice on me in a year, Not sure why but its a problem for these. You can get new stators on ebay for like $20 though.

im pretty shure now that it is the coil. i did a proper stator test and it was getting 12.8 volts, im assuming thats good.
so i think its the coil, il order one up on ebay tomorow
Start with the cheap and easy stuff first. Wire brush the tarnish off of the wire connectors starting with the ground connector to the coil. That one seems to have more of a problem because the tab coming out of the coil is bare copper. If you want to know which connector was the problem, check spark after each connector that you clean. Use dielectric grease to prevent the problem in the future.
I have revived eight ATC's that had no spark. Seven just needed the connectors brushed, one had a failed primary coil. Twenty five years of sitting out in the elements takes it's toll on dry connectors.
