    185s Head

I took the head off of my 81 185s yesterday and took it to the machine shop today to have the seats cut and new valves and valve seals put in. I have a question about something I seen though.

Should this rubber plug be in the hole that is by the camshaft?

I looked in the manual and seen nothing about it, I looked online at a parts list and seen it. Would like to know what it is for and if I need it or not. Thanks.

I just realized I didn't mark the position of the cam gear on the cam, is that going to be a problem?

I guess when the "0" on the cam gear is pointing up, the cam lobes should point down? I didn't see anything in the manaul about what to do if you took the gear off the cam. Unless I overlooked it? I read through it twice.

I saved the manual in the link, it is better than the clymer.

Yep cam lobes down and the "o" will be to the top to index the cam on the rocker cover. MAKE SURE that rubber plug comes back from the machine shop before you install the head and cam. It need to be there so the oil gets out to the cam.

I took the rubber plug out before I took it to the machine shop to make sure they didn't loose it, lol.

After I got everything apart last night I realized the previous person had put one of the components for the tensioner in backwards so it was completely unfunctional, no wonder it was so noisy. The chain floppin around wore the heck out of the guides.

So I got that fixed and put in a new guide, tensioner, and timing chain. Waiting on head to come from the shop and I should be riding again.

Oh and the previous person also thought it was a good idea to smack the flywheel with a so the end is buggered up where the flywheel puller should thread into. I got some longer bolts and used the holes that hold on the starter cage and a puller to get it off.
