you wont be disapointed in the 230 engine if you can find one for a good price
Lifan makes a 230cc engine listed as a 250 I think. I wonder what size jets you would need.

Whats old is new.
I have an 84 x with a Loncin (same as Lifan) OHV 200cc engine in it. Same engine HarryRedTrike used.
It runs great. It will smoke my other 84x with a tired stock engine in it. I even run taller gears than the stocker because the Loncin will pull taller gears with no issues.
I don't ride a lot, but I flog the thing mercilessly when I do ride. It has a handfull of trail riding days and a 4day dune weekend on it with no issues. Starts easy. Runs both my 55w Hellas with no problem. I would buy one again in a heartbeat.
When I built this trike, it was going to be an Auto-X because I had a couple of 200 engines. They turned out to be not so fresh so then I wanted to use a CRF230 engine but they are expensive. I had no luck finding a cheap one. I got the Loncin from a near new dirt bike I paid $180 for (Craigslist).
I booger welded (because I don't have enough practice) brackets on the frame for a 400ex battery box and notched the tube under the engine to clear the drain plug. I used a $5 pit bike switch set for kill/start/lights switch and essentially made my own wire harness. I used a 350x brake pedal for the rear brakes. My X was well stripped when I got it.
