    crazy idle o the 83 185s

    so i got this thing running the orig gas tank is toast rusty and leaking quickly . so heres the issue i ran some gas carb cleaner mix and it smoked for a couple secs and then had a crazy high idletried turning in the idle screw to nothing and it still went wild i am also using a bottle to start it and what not since the tank blows whats the issue carb rebuild?ands the throttle seems to not effect the idle ever when i push to full it actually mnakes the thing idle lower weird to me what do u guys think?

    today i may get to the hoses there all bad and some clogged so ill get some new vacume hose and hopfully itll help something if not needs to be done anyways.

    thanks for the help remember it idled low the carb cleaner.

    sounds to me like the springs are shot on the advancer. how does it run when you go mid to full throttle?

    Or a split in the intake or some sort of air leak.

    after re reading the post. sounds like you need to start fresh with a carb rebuild and go from there.

    Clean the carb first ,,
    Completely clean it then go from there
    i have once seen a single clip missing on the carb needle it was jumping around causing it to run like a Monkey on CRACK@@lol
    not saying thats it
    but seriusly clean the carb and use wire to got through all the ports and holes...

    yeah, there's a 'w' clip that holds the main needle down inside the piston and I've seen those flip sideways and let the needle settle wherever it wants to.
    but why did it go koo koo after the carb cleaner?
    if I read that correctly.

    the spark advance plate and springs can also hang up so it tries to idle in the advanced position.
    Throttle cable can also be kinked or be yanked of it's not routed correctly under the tank.

    If you push the throttle and let it go? can you hear it snap shut?

    I've got one of those I need to fool with today too.
    I have a plastic lawnmower tank I use to test run these things and bypass the rusty tanks.

    You may get away with POR15 to seal the tank.
    They say it plugs pinholes and actually turns the rust to some form of inert glass by using phosphoric acid to react with the iron oxide.

    Try to clean the tank real good or you'll keep clogging your carb and fuel petcock filter screen.

    I also get a foot or so of tygon see thru fuel line and loop it down so it has a low spot in it for the rust to settle in.

    It doesn't need clamps so I pull the line off periodically and just let it puke the rust and slip it back on.

    Also got one, actually 2 of those see thr paper inline filters but gravity feed gas wasn't enough pressure for the gas to run thru it.
    but you could blow thru it super easily.

    Funny how the strangest things can mess us up.

    I run a inline fuel filter on all any old metal fuel tanks if its bikes motorcycles or boat tank,,EXAMPLE look at my rattrike.. no problems there..
    GET them at princess Auto cheap if you dont want to use a AUX tank...
    OH And OF COURSE OLD SLEDS...

    Check for intake leaks and for a improper functioning advancing mechanism..
    you could aLSO USe a slightly cracked Propane bottle around your carb insulator thats the proper term lol which is lame..
    The Carb boot is better,,,

    If it has any leak your enigine will respond when you give it a whiff of propane
    its better thasn spraying flamable liquids all over your engine...
    Not good...

    im going to take the carb off today and seer what happens i checked the throttle cable i can feel it on the screw cap moving on the carb. may need to change the oil again its black again also have a gasket for the exhaust cleaned and dilectric greesed the wire connections. is there a manual for the 185 i didnt see it on the list anyone got a link to the 185
