Post Help: 82? ATC250R Build ( New purchase, scored cylinder)

This sites setup is poor, I would like some advice but I cannot post in the forum ZZZZ kinda pissing me off because I could've swore my account had to wait to be activated by hand, but I have to post in this new member ishtar.
^I dont usually get mad at stuff, but I really am moving towards getting this 250r running.

Guy said it was an 82, but the steering stem does not have the label? Painted over?
Purchased two days ago $140, Total is $200 including gasoline. and 5 Hrs of time
So, Low initial price. I dont want it clean, just running!

    Pic of it loaded up

    in my garage

    Cleaned up the carb

my 200s, pops 185s, my 250r, just put the wood stove in too, woot woot

Does the dip stick have a little nub on it to check the level for the tranny? In the service manual it doesnt show one, so maybe not, looked broken to me though

Can I buy a rebuild kit for my MC? will that fix the rears?

    reason the guys selling it

' he gave me a new piston " i think its a weisco"'
Its a 4stroke piston i think, kinda a jerk thing to do

Can i use this head? Detenation? water?
Ive never seen a 2 sparkplug head either! do u use it? my coil only has one lead on it, do you just swap plugs if one fouls?

    wrist pin bearing was owned

Hopefully my temper clears up and I dont hate these forums, could really use your guys help on it.

I'm a bit confused? Since you didnt ask any questions all I can gather is you are mad about the rules of this site, and you want to put a four stroke piston in a beat to hell 250R. Good luck!

I had an old 500cc dirt bike back in the day...the name escapes me right now, but it had 2 plugs in the head with i think 1 lead. I was told it was pretty much for a back up plug?? Although I can't see the unused plug lasting that long when it's being coated with gas/oil and not burning it away under ignition.

Don't get upset, have some patience. The rules are set up the way they are for good reason, but that's a story for another day.

I wouldn't use that head, it looks pretty bad.

That is definitely a 4 stroke piston and obviously you can't use it.

You'll have to dig into that rear master cylinder and see what you've got there. I'm not sure about the availability of the parts for that.

Try to find an aftermarket pipe if it's still got the stock pipe and if it's the stock carb (Like 27mm I think?) toss that and get a 34mm or so.

There is no dip stick. You check the oil by removing the check plug on the right side of the engine. You fill the case with fluid until the oil starts to seep out of the hole.

    Good luck!

    Cool thanks
Grabbed an 81 head off ebay, $30 shipped? cannot complain, thanks to whoever parts em out on ebay! ( as long as its not stripped -_-)
Next order will probably be crank seals, needle bearing, left cover gasket. ( from servicehonda )
I'm not usually an ebay shopper but its nice for certain things.

Honda ATC250R 1981-84 Rear Brake Caliper Rebuild Kit

I did a little reading up on the 2plug head, It sounded like you could ( if you fouled a plug ) Swap the plug wire over and it would get you home likely, its a backup. I guess as long as the other plugs igniting the mixture it doesnt get too fouled.

What i was interested in was that you can buy a decompression plug for the hole. My friend has a 250r, its not bad to kick over but if I get this thing running and tuned, it would be nice to just hold the decompression in, give it a kick and let go of the decomp and start it easy. I cant imagine kicking stuff over is good on the feet you know?

I will compare my 81 head with the odyssey!

And I understand how forums work and bots/webcrawlers too. whatever. I was waiting two days so I could get some responses, I wouldve liked to know that head was an odyssey a fewdays ago rather than sign up and wait, Im loosing time to tune it in nicely.

I have read that every 10°F below what the 2stroke is tuned for, you should up the jet size. Im going to have to have a pretty fat jet for the winter if i want to slide this thing on the river
Another thing, I have a stock pipe with a banshee stinger welded over the end. - may modify jetting
And the airbox has just some random filter and no sidecover. - may modify jetting also, less restrictive.

and also, for throwing on another carburetor, who makes intakes? id go with a mikuni vm I think if they make them in the 30mm+ size

I know you've moved past this but just to follow up:

My old bike with 2 plugs was a 500cc Montesa. The name just came to me a minute ago. here's a pic. Hopfully it's big enough because you can see the 2 plugs in the head.

My buddy ran a '86 piston (I forget the size, it was about 15 years ago) in his '84 with a spacer plate under the cylinder. I can't remember if any special machining had to be done to the piston to get it to work.

I don't know about the 85-86 piston, I doubt it would work without some serious mods.

The 250R engine is the same from 81-84 with the exception of the shifter shaft. The first gen (81-82) has a longer shaft.

The two pistons are similar in skirt design but the 81-84 uses a larger bore. I think he used a 302cc big bore '86 piston and a spacer plate on his '84. Now that I think of it I don't remember any mods to the piston, but don't hold me to that.
