the threads are all screwed up. im not sure if they are cross threaded or if the nut just chewed em up when i pulled it off. what can i do to keep this axle in use?

How many threads do you need to start about this axle? It's bent and has stripped threads, go to eBay or check here to see if you can get a used one, problem solved.

It's a 18 mm axle, not exactly for sure on the pitch. Get it to a machine shop,or figure out the pitch, and get your own tap. DO NOT try to rig it! These axles[ 86-7 - 200X} are not easy to find.Fix it once fix it right. Get a new nut ,and good as new.
Please help those who cannot help themselves.

ALWAYS buying Museum quality machines,3 and 4 wheels. And any and ALL ,NOS parts,EVERY brand.

I am turning my PM's Off,my Email is billsracing@hotmail.com,put 3WW in the subject. Thanx!

you can get a cheap set of metric tap and dies from HF, or just by the right die for the axle thread and pitch!! quality taps and dies are pricey though!! igot the HF set and its alright! should do the trick. they have real cheap sets, stay away from them!! the set i have came in a large metal black case and serves its purpose, cant remember if it was 50 or 100 bucks!

that thread is 18mm1.5. It looks like the axle threads are gone. you might have to have it rethreaded to 16mm1.5 thread. Its a fairly common size for car/truck spindles, you should be able to get castle nuts w/o problems.

i can use a grinder, but i dont want to when i comes to a $300+ part. id rather spend the money for a machine shop to do it. should i make both sides 16mm to get "fresher" metal exposed for the threads? or just this side?

Depends on what the other side looks like. If the threads are still there, and the new nut is biting. I would leave it. Glad to hear you're gonna have it lathed! You will be saving yourself a lot of future nightmares!
