Anyone Else Bench Run a Motor?

Since I find it a pain in the azz to get the US90 motor in and out of a frame, I thought I'd bench test a motor that was part of a basket case trike I bought. I made a crude bracket to secure the coil to the case and blocked the engine up on my lift table. Not pretty but it worked. This motor was said to have potential tranny issues. The good; the motor purrs like a kitten, the bad; no 'Hi' range and you have to sometimes shift twice, up or down to change gears. I don't know if that's because it's been sitting so long or what. My spider senses are telling me the tranny has issues. I have another engine for this project (also questionable) so I have options. Think the tranny is worth looking into?

Two wires only. Just had to look over the wiring diagram; that's important. No kill switch but the choke will do the same.

thats a good idea , those 90/110/125 seem harder to switch then the bigger ones ,wish i had tested mine before mounting the 125 up, it runs great but same problem dont shift right so its gotta come back out , hopefully its just the shift forks or something easy lol ,not sure but the high,low is seperate from the main trans so that may be easy fix ,between the 2 you should be able to make one good one, least you saved youself the hassle of in,out, back in, gonna tackle that 125 again next weekend

Hey coolpool, I've had the 90-110 hi lo shifters be really rusty stuck and took some convincing to get them to go all the way into and out of hi and lo.

jedi? The 125 has common issues with the 'shift drum stopper' bolt coming loose,
Acts like a real mystery shifter. Tap once or twice to change gears. Maybe 3 times.

EZ fix, I rolled the trike on it's side, took off the clutch side cover and there it was.
Can't seem to upload pix at the moment. Sorry.

My final oddity was a 90 that the guy took the hi lo gears out of and handed them to me but it still
ran/shifted fine.
He must've left one of them in there.

thanks that sounds like what its doing ,will check it out , glad i dont have to take the moter all out again , what a pain ! the kids will be happy ,if i get it working .. how would the 90 run if the hi/low gears are out ?? I want to do a clutch conversion on my 90 one of these days . I read a couple threads about it , sounds good need a sl 90 moter for parts i think ? gotta do more research on it !! my 125 and 90 both have pppc front forks , love to get a custum susp. frame for the 90 ,$$ or lucky score

yeah, that 'shift drum stopper' mounting bolt is what I found in the search key.

I also posted pix last summer when I did it so they have to be on here somewhere.

I had the luxury of a 110 parts motor for autopsy and when I took the side cover off
(engine was normal vertical position)
I started touching all the cool levers and cams and wobbly washers with the ball bearings

and since they simply sit there, they came off easily in my hands and I had NO idea how to put it back together.

so when I finally got to the 125, I laid it flat *&^% on it's side so nothing would move.
took pictures and then took stuff off ONE at a time and put it back on and so on.

I'll retry pix tomorrow but bet they come up with the search key.

Not my scene either but we do a massive music festival around the same time.
3 days of food and music.
Of course, a 12 pack of assault trikes to putt around on for our security team.
At least thats my excuse for collecting them.

Yeah, top bet is your shift drum stopper mounting bolt came loose or got bent.
Worst case is the stopper lever itself is avail everywhere and is like 10 bucks.

I had 6 pages of pix to choose from here in my stash at 3ww but I can't seem to access

Yeah, my 125m runs great but is kinda unfixable because the standoff in the case casting broke off
where the bolt screw in to hold the shift drum stopper.

Someone must;'ve beat the daylights out of it and kept going..
It was 100$ with 3 good tires so I can't complain. Non busted plastics but no seat.
I hate parting trikes out but this one may qualify.
or I could drop in a 110 but I already have 4 or 5 - 90/110's
and the weather sucks for working tediously outside with freezing tools.

Time to ride and huge bonfires and burn the leftover christmas trees and stuff like that.

Interesting Pete.. I am curious how much it vibrated! At school,,we had to bench run ALL our motors ,which were ALL Briggs and Tecumsehs.. Fast forward 12 years.. My Dairy farmer neighbors with self propelled silage carts started bringing me in these 5.5 HP Honda engines.. They lived absolutely thankless lives. Yank the cord Morning ,noon and night 365 days a year. Check the oil ? maybe once in a great while.. Anyhow,,the breather boot would rip from heat and the rot of the silage. Which would burn the valve stems.. ANYHOW! The 1st time,,and every time after! I benched one of them ,I would just stand there in total amazement!! They would start up,and just sit there idling.. NO clamps! At school?? Those briggs and Tecumsehs would run away from you the entire way down the bench without a MINIMUM of 2 or 3 clamps! I was always a Honda guy. But to see this 1st hand without prethinking it always blew my mind!! That's my bench story! I have never done it with a motorcycle/atv/sled though.

I was a little nervous at first about the vibrations but was totally amazed at how smooth it was. I never did go much above idle since this was just to see how it ran and shifted.

The Alabama Gang have a 90 engine mounted on a trailer they tow behind a 110 hooked to a beer keg for a Margarita machine..So I would consider that "bench testing"..LOL

cool - i had a couple motors that have been sitting for a long time. seemed like the gears were shot. someone told me they had the same issues with their 90 motors. he said they just need oil and you have manually move the shifter and sub trans lever back and forth a bunch to bring them back to life. seems to work for me. one of my sub trans wouldnt shift and after riding it a few times it finally did. it was a huge relief. when i was young i had a 125 new. i remember shifting the sub trans while the bike was in gear but now for my 90's i have to stop, put it in neutral and rock the bike back and forth and its still a little tricky. dont know if thats exactly what you are describing but dont give up. i think alot of people have trouble with these sub transmissions. they wind up opening them up and screwing them up more. i got a bike once that was missing pieces inside there, and i know another guy that had the same issue. get out a diagram or open both of your motors side by side and make sure you have all the bearings and gears too.
