Some questions about my 84 Tecate

Since I've gotten the shock replaced and rear brakes working on the Tecate I've had a change to test ride it a little. I ran fine as far as I could tell but not having rear brakes and a springer rear end I wasn't willing to really push it any. The exhaust gasket was completely shot and some exhaust was blowing right out of the head. I found when replacing the exhaust seal and O-ring that my pipe didn't fit square into the exhaust port. On closer inspection I found my pipe was badly bent and the new seal and O-ring had little effect on the leak. Also, the silencer seems to be way too heavy. I assume the packing is full of oil. What effect will the bent leaking pipe and oil filled silencer have on performance? I fells like the jetting is way off - starts very easily, the idle seems about normal for a 2 stroke, it bogs a little right off the bottom, pulls good through the mid range but fails to ever rev out, falling well short of peak RPM's. I have a pipe bought (payment is on it's way tecat-z) but I've had no luck finding a silencer. I don't think there is any reason to start messing with the jetting until I have a working exhaust, so I haven't. At this point I've decided to go with a V-force 3 reeds/cage and now I'm wondering if I should upgrade to a better carb. I always thought that a flat slide carb was better for 2 strokes but I've never questioned why. Every bike I've had came with a flat slide carb, so I've never really thought anything about it. If I'm going to change carbs, this is the time. So, any advice, recommendations, pros or cons on upgrading to a flat slide carb? I'm not like the twist throttle on it either, so advice on changing to thumb throttle will be needed too. I'm going to look at a local motor cycle salvage for suitable alternative silencers. I would like to have something sized to fit the area but I can make a mid pipe or move the mounts if I have to. Does anyone know about what size or from what bikes I should start with?

I'm only going to share my opinion about the carb situation.

My fastest and best running Tecate used the stock Mikuni 34mm round slide carb. The cylinder was ported and it had a very nice CRF pipe. The airbox was stock. That bike used to chew up and spit out anything around it. R's and Tri-Z's, big bores and long rods, Keihin's with flat slides, whatever.

TecateDan runs the 38mm round slide Mik on his bike but he has the KX jug, not the Tecate one. My ported Tecate jug with the 34mm round slide had great low end power and pulled through on the top enough to walk away from anyone. I'd stick with the stock carb if you have a good example.

I thought DG still makes the oval type II silencer for the tecate? That would be the only new one I would know of. I have a silencer from my dirtbike on mine. My bike is a 91 YZ 250, and I put the stock silencer onto my 84 tecate. I turned the silencer upside down as the mounts arent a match, and used a small exhaust clamp over the rubber seal piece to clamp the sucker on, and it has held on for years. As for the throttle, Im not sure but I think I remember someone putting a thumb throttle from a 85 R, and it worked out, but another guy didnt like it because it said Honda.... What kind of expansion chamber did you get?

I use a 38mm airstryker and a 39mm pwk keihin . Both carbs are ran by suzuki or kawasaki z400 kfx400 thumb throttles and cabels. a universal fmf turbine core is a good choice for a silencer. if your running a stock cylinder a 34 mikuni round slide is a good choice. Cheap carb but works great.

As far as I know there is no work done to the engine. I haven't checked cylinder pressure but with the ease that it will starts and the amount of force needed to turn it over would lead me to believe that it's well within spec. I will have some work done on the cylinder when I get everything the way I want it and tear it back down for powder coating. I don't know much about the expansion chamber I bought. I bought it here from tecat-z and haven't even seen a picture of it. He said it was a new/unused old style DG. Is the OEM carb on my 84 the Mikuni 34mm? Since you all have had good results with the 34mm Mikuni, I'll stay with it. Assuming stock average condition engine, the DG pipe I described and I'm at 1500' above sea level, where would be a good place to start with my jetting? Is the V Force reeds and cage a good value as an up grade? I'm sure I tracked down information on them one that showed there was one that would work for the KXT but didn't find that information tonight. It was something like the reed cage from the KXT was the same as many years of the KX and V Force showed a part number for some of those KX's. I'll try to check cylinder pressure sometime this weekend and run that by you all and see where I'm at with it. 1 thing to understand about my expectations, I'm not looking to build a fast trike. I'm looking to have mine right on the dot with the tune. I'm not a very good rider, so I know that the power it makes when it's right is plenty enough for me. I want a crisp throttle response, rev quickly and pull hard all the way to the top. Thanks for the info but no one made a mention about what negative effects the bent pipe, exhaust leak and heavy silencer will have on it.

what jets are in it now? the float level will also have a huge impact, I have better luck with the stock carbs than anything else.I do have a t3 with a 38mm tm flatside that seems un tunable and runs like ass. with the 84 34mm and a dg pipe I would start at a 310 main and work down. you will end up somewhere beteen 290-305. but make sure you float is set right before you even start tuning

I ran a 38mm PWK, 250r cable and thumb throttle. It ran like a rape ape. Jonolanracin on here bought it and he said it flat out hauls.

A little welding and tweaking and this is what Fabio and I came up with for my tecate silencer. Ask John is sound awesome even the honda guys I ride with have complimented how nice it sounds

Nice picture, Dan. That's pretty much what I've come up with. A buddy of mine has a couple of LT500R's and lots of extra parts. I think size wise it the silencer from one of them is where I'll start, he has some extra's I can get one of those. On another topic, what seat is that you're using on the Tecate pictured? I'm wanting to go with something like that for mine. I want it to come up on the tank farther than stock but not as far as the Hi Flight seats. I used to help out in the afternoons at an upholstery shop and I had him to order a block of seat foam and vinyl to make a seat for mine. It's hard to tell from the angle of that picture but I think it's exactly what I want. Is there any pictures of that bike where I can get a better view of the seat's profile?

That's just a stock seat. I think its the angle that makes it look larger. If looking for a custom seat skin go to hiddencomfortcamo.com . They made me an awesome custom seat cover for 50$ and it was embroidered . Very happy with my experice with them

ben6626, sorry I missed you post and failed to respond. I don't know what jets are in it now. Like I said, I didn't mess with it because of the shape it has been in. When my pipe comes in and I figure out a silencer to use I'll get into the carb. How would you suggest setting the float height? I should know that but for some reason I don't.
TacateDan, I need a seat foam and cover. Mine looks like part of the foam is gone and the cover made have been made from a shower curtain.
