issues with my 85 atc 250r

some of you may know ive been having a horrible time with my 85r. well after it sitting for over 2 months i decided to put it back together and try to get it running any better than it has. pu it together, and the carb is leaking gas from the overflow tube on the bowl itself. i kicked the living day lights out of the stupid thing and it popped one time, and never made a noise after that. put a little gas in the spark plug hole and kicked it with no luck. has bright bluish white spark, on a new plug. so i pulled the plug, put my finger over the plug hole and kicked it a few times. it sucks your finger in alot harder than it does pushing it out (compression). so i took the reeds out to inspect them for maybe one being cracked or not seated. pulled them out and they are soaking wet. like i literally pulled them out of a can of gas. is this from my carb? as in flooding out way bad???
ive had problem after problem with this bike. have owned it over a year and maybe have 40 minutes of not running ride time on it. its depressing. any suggestions? should i just can the carb and get a flat side off a 86 or newer 250R??

heres a link to my original thread with all the problems im having

You need to fix that carb leak before you bother with anything else. Needle jet (clean or replace) and then make sure the float is set at the right height. In the meantime, with the fuel and ignition OFF and the plug removed kick it over and see if fuel comes out of the hole. If it does I suspect your cases are full of fuel leaked from the carb. Kick it over a few times then leaving the plug out and the piston at BDC (lowest point) so it can dry out. Get a compression gauge and check how many PSI you have. I don't know your ride, but I'm guessing it should have at least 150-170psi, if so thats a good sign. If, after fixing the carb leak and drying out the engine it still won't run you may have an electrical issue which I'm sure some of the Honda guys here can help you with.

    Good luck

motor had 185psi of compression when i did my leak down test, which was done about 2 months ago, and havent touched it since till today. carb has a brand new carb kit installed. literally everything electrical has been replaced except stator.

You have a carb problem, specifically flooding due to a sticking/out of adjustment float.

well its on its 2nd motor, and 2nd carb. first carb that came with bike wouldnt run at all on idle or when trying to ride. now the 2nd carb i bought runs at idle (normally, not today) and wont run when riding....so it is still possible that this carb is junk too. im looking into a flatside from a 86+ 250r. but dont know if throttle cables are the same, or if the newer carb will fit my carb boot on the reeds

ride-red i literally laughed out loud when i saw the "CHOOT EM CLINT!!!" on your signature

Yes, it is possible you still have carb problems on the second carb you have tried. There is only one reason you would have fuel running out the overflow, and that is that the fuel metering needle is allowing too much fuel in. Could be the float is out of adjustment or sticking, could be the needle is sticking or there is a piece of crud in the seat not allowing the needle to fully seal. Either case, a problem like that will certainly and severely flood your engine making it difficult, if not impossible to start.

The cables are different from the roundslide to the flat slide carbs. I would recommend a Keihin PWK or PWK Airstryker. I dont like the choke/idle speed setup on the stock flatslide 34mm carbs. My cousin has an 87 TRX and we are having trouble dialing it in. Maybe it's just me, but I don't like that carb. If I couldn't get my hands on a PWK, I would just run the old roundslide myself.

Other than the throttle cable being different, the 34m flatslide carb will mount right up. No issues with the intake or anything like that. They are the same size carbs, just different type.

And yes, BIG Troy Landry fan here!

if you go with a 86 you have to change the intake and air boots...the trottle cable for the 85 should fit the throttle slide for the 86

Just a few weeks ago, I gave my cousin one of my old rounslide carbs to try on his TRX that originally had the flatslide carb.... Bear with me, I'm tired as heck and about to go to bed... But now I am second guessing my memory on the cable. I will call him tomorrow and find out for sure if we had to swap cables or not.. Trying to remember, I could almost swear we did, but now I'm not sure enough to say...

But I can tell you with 100% certainty, the carbs will both fit the same intake boot. They are both Keihin 34mm carbs, just different valve type.

the throttle cable should work between either carb, i never had to switch my cable for anything even going from my 34 round slide to my 38 pwk a/s. for that fact i dont ever remember having to specify which year when it came to buying a cable. if i was still in the midwest id swing up to help you out steve sounds like its a never ending problem and i'd be glad to help but since im not there id have to suggest the floats like all the others.

Intakes and air box boots are the same for both years. The older they get the harder they get and it makes them shrink. SteveCZ28, spend the 150-200 on a brand new carb and stop trying to dick with the 25-26 year old junk. These old carbs will drive you absolutely nuts. If your bike is mostly stock you can pick up a new 34mm pj for around $150 or a bigger pwk for close to $200.

RE PWK: Just an FYI for those of you looking to buy or sell one. I ordered one a couple of months ago and the deal fell through because the guy couldn't get them in for “an indefinite period” So I started calling around and it turns out SUDCO (the only distributer of Keihin in the US) is out as of 38mm Air Strikers and others as of about a month ago. I talked to a rep there and he said it’s because they can’t get the rubber needed to make the gaskets and seals due to the auto makers coming back on line after the tsunami. He said no one knows when more carbs will ship State side. Anyway, I’m sure they are still out there (I found one for $215) but you may pay a little more for the next while.

    a 34mm pj is a flatside on 86+ 250r's correct?
