1985 250R Kickstarter: Washers or not?

Tearing down my '85, I noticed that the washers that go on either side of the collar on the outside of the kicker gear are not there. Doing some research, some later years don't use them, but because they were redesigned.

My question: do I need to get ahold of the washers and add them, or leave it alone?

PS- the FEW times I kicked it over after buying it, it didn't appear to slip.

85 had a center collar and 2 flat washers.

86 just had the center collar which I imagine is the same width as the 85 set up stacked on the collar.

Thanks DC. Some sites call 'em thrust washers, too, and with them being discontinued I don't know where to get 'em.

They were only used on the motors with s/n up to 2410440. Motors 2410441 and later did not use them.

I went through the same thing with my 85 the when I had to replace the clutch. It puzzled the hell out of me. Finally with the help of the local bike shop, we determined they were only used very early on. The label on my frame say 11/84 and the s/n on it's engine is 2411171.

You guys can get (about) any size and thickness thrust washer at McMaster/Carr just an FYI........

Sometimes I machine something flat and lose .012 and make it up with a thrust washer (but, I always check 1st!)

Thanks, Fallout! Mine's the latter, so it seems I don't need 'em! Good to know, 'cause I didn't wanna have to mess with it.

DC- thought about that, but I didn't/don't have the dimensions of the washer, other than it was/is 20mm. No thickness, id, od, etc...

Will, my '85 is a late serial number and I just had my clutch cover off. It only had the collar just like my '86.

you could just bring it to your brothers house and he has the tools to make all that you know......Even if he still hasnt put his Tecate together

You guys can get a cheap micrometer and vernier caliper for about 25$ that's good enough for what you guys have to deal with. ENCO is pretty cheap with imported stuff; I don't care for the cheap plastic digital ones because every time I need it, the battery is dead . At M/C you can purchase a 6" scale (or ruler as we know them) in metric increments for quick metric measurements.
