If you had a manual it would tell you to use 10w40 or 10w30.

Actually I highly recommend synthetic oils. They're superior to conventional oils in almost every way.

I use 10W40 in my 250R. Some use synthetic. Some use automotive automatic transmission fluid.
Somebody made a joke about using liquid margarine, basically:
"As long as you keep the fluid at the proper level and change it periodically most any lubricant will work."

Never heard of using ATF as transmission fluid but it's only like 7w so I can't see it being right. It's recommended for fork oil replacement but never heard as a replacement for transmission oil.

Synthetic oils are too "slick" for wet clutch systems. It will work but your clutch plates will slip more before they grab. My experience has been straight-up 10w-40 and I've not had a transmission nor clutch failure in 30+ years.

People have used ATF for years and it works great. This is a fact.

Also, the synthetics designed for use with a wet clutch are superior in almost every way as I stated. Your info is wrong. It's not such a big deal since this is the new guys' section, but please refrain from spreading such bad info throughout the forum. Thank you.

    ^^^Agreed^^^

I have heard many opinions over the years on wether or not it is important to use oil designated for motorcycles and/or wet clutches. But personally, I choose to run "wet clutch safe" motorcycle or ATV oil. And I use the weight oil recommended by my Honda Service manual, and that's 10w-40.

I have no doubt that ATF works fine as some here use. After all, an automatic trasmission in a vehicle is very similar to our ATV transmissions in that they have a multi-disc wet clutch. Those transmissions are just bigger and more sophisticated and IMHO endure ALOT more use and abuse. I wouldn't hesitate to use ATF in my R if motorcycle oil wasn't readily available, I'm sure it's up to the task.....
