What is the lever on the front right side of the motor for? I've looked through the manual but can't find anything on it.

On the top of the cylinder head, right side..... decompression lever. If I recall, 81-82 were a manual lever but the following years were actuated via a cable tied to the pull start.

So it is used to help with pullstarting? Mine has a cable attached to the lever on the head but disconnected on the other end. According to the vin on my frame, mine is an '82, maybe I have an '83 motor...
no worries. I never used mine. They start easy enough without decompressing the motor.
The 82 185s owners manual, says "the decompression system is interlocked with the recoil starter".
