    Calling all Carb Experts

Hi All, I am need of some direction...

First a little background...I have a newly acquired 1985 250R, my first 3rd gen. I am running a RAD valve, airbox with lid, FMF fatty pipe and the motor is bone-stock otherwise. I will mostly be riding trails, some dunes, the occasional "balls out" drag race and will normally ride 1200 ft in elevation. I am not very familiar with the 250R carbs, but from reading a few articles on this site and others, I have finally narrowed it down to a 38MM PWK. Another reason for this choice is I would like to eventually purchase a 310 kit and figured I would go ahead and get a piece of the puzzle out of the way.

I have been looking at purchasing a 38MM PWK carb from ESR but all they or CT racing sell are the Airstrikers. After visiting the Sudco website I see that they offer a 38MM PWK NON-Airstriker and a 38MM PWK Airstriker/Quadvent.

I am looking for advice on which carb I should get while taking into consideration that I would like to keep this carb for my future 310 kit.

All help is greatly appreciated and thanks in advance!

I ran a 38mm Kehin Air Stryker on my all stock 86 ATC with a pipe and even with the stock exhaust. I dont remember the jetting I used though. Im up in Wisconsin out elevation goes fro sea level to 1500 feet. ESR sold me the 38mm had it machined but when I bought a 39mm PWK Carlos from Bad Dog Motorsports said I didn't need to machine it to fit in the boots. Just put on a new boot heat the air box hose with a heat gun and it goes right in. The esr carb I got machined by them is hard to keep in the air box snorkel because there is no lip on it. You need a cable too. BDT cost more but he will help you with jetting. I just dont like esr at all and would spend $40 more on a carb from somewhere else because I dislike them that much. Pretty sure a 39mm would be fine on a stock motor. Go on trx250R.net there is alot more help on there for your R

the airstryker carbs have a v casting on the bottom of the carb bore that suppose to direct air across the needle jet in a straight even manor with out the air rotating or twisting threw. Also the quad vent is suppose to help keep engine from bogging when jumping or rough terrain other than that both carbs work somewhat the same.i think the avearge rider would have a hard telling the difference.

Ditch the air box lid. Unless you plan on using it as a submarine there is no need for it where we will be riding. I rode my bike for 15 years without one and never had a problem. The fenders are pretty close to the top of the box and do a good job of keeping the junk out. Plus it will a tuning nightmare with that bigger carb.
