This would be my first guess since you just ran it out of gas.

BUT it's much easier to take the gas cap off and make sure it's venting. If it starts with no gas cap on it, you know your tank vent isn't working properly.

that's what happened to mine when the gas cap wasn't venting correctly. It was about to die and I quickly took the cap off and it kept going.

    Good luck

So when you say the cap wasn't venting does that mean the little hole on the top if the gas cap??

Yea I believe so, that's the only place it could vent from. I took it off and it worked ever since lol.. not sure why it hasn't happened since but whatever i fixed it =D

are you running a fuel filter or is it just the straight lines? I definitely recommend a fuel filter and good carb clean, make sure you completely take the carb apart and clean each jet and replace the o-rings as they tend to crack over time as well.
rectum nothin damn near killed them

There is a set of screens on the petcock inside the tank but sometimes they are broken off on these old bikes so I run an inline fuel filter on all my bikes that $3.50 can save you a lot of headaches. since it started when you run out of gas its most likely debris that got sucked into the carb.
