    81 250R worth paying $500 for?

I found a 250R. The guy wants $750 for it. I think I might be able to talk him down to $500 though. I can't decide if it's worth it for $500 anyways? It looks like an 81 to me. I don't like the looks of it because of how big the front tire is. He says it runs, ans that he rode it last month, I think it would look good if I cleaned it up a bit. What do you guys think? Worth the $500?

If it runs its worth the 500. I didn't used to like them but it grew on me and now I'm working on restoring one. You can swap out the front end for a 200x front end. It looks better and you will gain a bit of ground clearance I think.

Yea same with me.. I hate the look of the 81, if you swapped that front to a 200x it changes it a lot! Then it starts to look good. $500 for a running 250r.. yes that's well worth it. If you do go to look at it bring a compression tester with, make sure its got compression.. not sure what they should be at. Glance for frame cracks/breaks, case cracks. Check swingarm bearings, rear bearings. Go to the front of the machine and lift up on the forks, if they go way up they may need air(not sure if they take air?) or a rebuild.

Just a few things I'd check over when buying a machine. Good luck and let us know if you get it!

it all comes down to your location and what its worth to YOU

fenders dont look too bad. front fender is non OEM, probably maier. rears look original. good seat cover and pan... if it runs, its a decent base to start with

change those goofy ass rear tires before you swap to a 200x front end. if youre thinking you want a bike with a narrow front tire, just hold out for a 200x, 83-86 250R, 350X. you can get a different tire for the front thats not so wide and utility lookin. the wide front end gives these 1st gens character

there are TONS of aftermarket parts out there for these 81/82's so you can build them up to be pretty wicked.
