The song has folk/early blues roots and has had a few different versions since the 30's. I think it's one of those songs thst has had so many different interpretations over the years that none of them are right or wrong. The Animals version is a house of ill repute named "The Rising Sun", or so the legend goes?

Damn do I miss Joe Cocker. I highly recommend anyone who is a Joe Cocker fan to buy the Mad Dogs and Englishmen extended tracks album. It's one of my favorite albums. Leon Russell on the piano and Bobby Keys on the sax are phenomenal.
