Every engine has one. Its no magical part that is inside the engine, but rather the rpm range in which the engine makes its power.

4 stroke power (200s) vs. 2 stroke power (yz 80/84 tecate). They both have "powerbands" or peak HP at higher RPMs. The difference is a 4 stroke comes on all through the RPM range where as a 2 stroke has a "hit" or a "powerband" as it reaches peak RPMs.
In short, yes, your 84 tecate has one helluva powerband. Hold on when it hits! LOL
My 85 Tecate has one of, if not the hardest hitting power band out of all my bikes.

hello niftylittleguy;
i actually did all the development work on those when I worked at Kawi. I would say it might be referred to a light switch power band to some degree, as mentiined by others if comes on rather suddenly, not as early or as smooth as the honda 250r but unlike the honda, it was designed to be a very high perf bike right out of the box.
if it has the stock silencer and you do not need a spark arrestor where you ride, I suggest you buy a straight through silencer and jet accordingly. it will virtually eliminate an inherent ping/detonation that occasionally happens when accelerating from lower rpms. plus it will make it "bleepin" fast, lol.
always listen for pinging as you accelerate, if it sounds excessive then quit riding and try to jet it, if that does not reduce it to acceptable levels then try higher octane gas.
if the clutch chatters or squeals slightly upon release, don't worry, it IS working properly, lol.
have fun, don't kill yourself, lol.
Throw a single plane intake under a blower geared for about 12psi and slap that on a mouse and I'll show you a 4-stroke with a helluva powerband!!![]()
