    Tri Z shock questions?

So my yellow 85Z shock is not blown but seems very soft compared to my 250R shock. Is Z suspension pretty "floaty" stock? My 250r seems much tighter/harder

Also, I had to basically put the spanner locking nut all the way down on the threads to get tension on the spring and to make the 2 base plates stay in like they are supposed to. Is this normal? My spring measures a little over 9 inches and another member measured his and said it was about the same.

Any info is great, thanks guys!

The Tri-Z shock should measure 13.5 inches eye to eye. Unfortunately, they are not rebuildable, however, you can build a "Frankenshock" as described in this thread
    http://www.3wheelerworld.com/showthr...-BUILD-THREAD!

Another option is to drop in a stock Warrior 350 shock with a remote reservoir. The Raptor or Banshee shocks can be made to work, but some modification will need to be done because of the gas tank placement and piggyback reservoirs.

    Good luck!

1985 1/2 Tri-Z - Custom Black & Gold, Top mount plastic tank, custom 3D printed airbox, Banshee shock
    1985 Tri-Z - Rider restore in process

    The Bad:

    The Ugly:

2000-ish Banshee / Motor by RDZ Racing in Fowlerville, MI - Another Duner!

I don't think mine is blown im just questioning the ride compared to a 250R, this is my first Z and it just feels VERY plush for a "sport" trike. also my measurement of a little over 9 inches was of the spring alone.

Really just looking for some feedback from guys that have both trikes and theyre opinions on the ride/suspension......Also I was just looking at sold oem Z shocks on ebay and they all look like they had the spanner lock nut tightened all the way down so im guessing this is the norm!

Yes there pretty mushy in stock form, i had my spring cranked right up rebound all the way in and the compression hard to get mine to work good, you can rebuild them also some heavy 10 15wt oil would help.

    I own 3 250r's and have owned 4 tri-z's.
Basically drive a 79 chevy caprice with blown shocks then take a ride in a brand new camaro ss and that is about the comparable statement I can make about the difference between the two. The R being the camaro ss ride of course. You can go do stuff to the Z suspension like aftermarket springs and shocks but still they are just inferior to the R setup.
Here is where my long useless list of stuff nobody cares about should go...

What they mean is you can't completely rebuild it. You can change the oil and recharge the gas, but if the head seal is leaking (and most of them do at this age) you cannot replace the head as with most shocks. This is because Yamaha permanently fixed the valve to the bottom of the shaft, whereas other companies use a nut that can be removed.
