Need some help with a new to me 1983 Yamaha YT175.

Hi all. I just picked up an 83 Yamaha YT175. At least I am pretty sure that is what it is. The serial number starts with 20E and the engine and frame numbers match. It is currently not running as it is missing the pull start assembly. it otherwise looks complete. Also came with a few extra rear plastic, tank plastic and front fenders. The extra rear plastics say 125 on them which makes me wonder what I really have. The rear plastic on the bike has no decals on it.

I was trying to find a service manual and an owners manual for this, but all the links on this site for manuals seem to be non-functional.

If anyone has a pdf version of them that they would be willing to share, it would be greatly appreciated.

Another question, I understand that these machines have an auto clutch. How does that work? Does it operate by centrifugal force(RPM) like the go-kart clutches, or do you just pop it in gear and it immediately starts moving?

    Thanks in advance.
    Regards, Stelni.

An auto clutch actually uses two clutches. One is a manual clutch that works when you use the shifter. The other one is centrifugal and requires engine rpms slightly above an idle to engage. You have to manually shift. You let off of the throttle and shift with your foot, the difference being that there's no clutch lever to pull. That's where the term "auto clutch" comes from.

Everything stated above is correct. So start the bike in neutral, pop it in first gear and it should just sit there. Throttle it up to go, shift up to second, and so on. Automatic clutch, manual shift.

Thanks folks, I appreciate the quick answers.

MonroeMike - Got the manual OK, should do the trick, thanks.

Yamaha seems to not have an owners manual for a 1983 Yt175, at least I can't find it. Any other options for finding a copy of it?

fabiodriven - Thanks for clarifying that. It makes sense now.

With an auto clutch, if your idle speed is too high, it can try to "creep" when you put it in first gear at an idle. Just another little tip.

    Thanks again folks.

Looks like eBay is the place for the owners manual.
