    Chain Master Link O-rings

    I finally got to cleaning and inspecting the chain on my 350X project (yup, it's to the point where I'm ready to put it back on).

    When I pulled it off, I noticed there were no O-rings on the master link, yet the rest of the chain was clearly an o-ring chain (and in good shape). Looking up information based on the markings on the chain, I think I have one of the good X-ring chains.

    The marks on the link say "LM520 S0X".

    Anyway, my question is what size o-rings do I need to put back on the master link? Are hardware store O-rings as good as anything? I figured I could just take the chain in with me and find something close, but didn't know how critical the correct size was (within reason of course). If someone knows the exact diameter and thickness I'd appreciate the info!

    Ok, I guess I should have done a bit more searching before posting that previous message...

    I just read that one of the things that makes an X-ring chain what it is are the O-rings. They aren't really o-rings but flat, rectangular cross section rubber rings. At least this is what I read on a website. Is this correct? Sounds like I should just go out and buy a new master link.

    Any additional advice would be appreciated.

    You can buy the o-ring master links at most dirt bike or street bike parts places. Beware there are 2 kinds of master links. The first needs a special tool to actually crush the ends of the master link to make it permanant, meaning that it has to be ground off to remove it, and the second is the normal removable master link. Also, if someone used a non o-ring master link, which will sometimes work but I wouldn't personally recommend it, it's just easier to buy a new master link with the o-rings that come with it.

    this is why i buy my chains a little long....if i loose an o ring i just take a link off the extra piece and use them.
    80s......185 atc, Yamaha tri-moto 200, 85 200x with tons of work
    90s......89 Suzuki quad racer 250 (raced 250 A class for 6 years, late 90s.. custom framed 250x with long travel shocks and a built 350x motor.... built Honda 110
    00s...... chomeoly framed 350 RX with all the goodies (thanks to my bro)

    Excellent info. Thanks guys. It makes sense now seeing the picture of the seal... why it's called an "X-Ring". If I can't get the seals at the shop, I'll just get a new master link.

    What is the opinion on the two types of master links? Is the non-permanent removable with a clip type considered acceptable? It seems like the permanent peaned rivet type would make life difficult putting the chain on. Wouldn't you have to unbolt the front sprocket and reinstall with the chain already looped over it? I don't know if there is enough adjustment to slacken the chain enough to do it any other way.

    now adays the clip type is what you'll find most times.

    go with the clip type but make sure you put the clip on the right way so it dont snag on things and pull itself off.

    I always seem to run into this. I've never been able to find o ring masterlinks, so I usually just run regular masters. Oh well.

    All it takes is a little patience & some coercion from a pair of channel-locks, and you'll get the o-rings in there.
