    Picked up a Tri-Moto 175

    Hey everyone, my cousin's buddy had a Tri-Moto 175 he was willing to part with for $50, so I picked it up just a little bit ago. I gave him $60 for it, since he was selling it cheap and needed the money. I don't know much about these, except that they're two stroke. I have an 86 200e, but it's a 4 stroke and looks a bit different than this one. I think the carb needs to be cleaned out and it should be a runner. Anything I should know about these particular models? I snapped a pic of it in the back of my truck, as I haven't unloaded it yet. Lemme know what ya think!

    Welcome to the boards if you have any questions I will try and answer them, the only thing I can recommend is blocking off the oil injection and running premix.

    I just realized that this thing has the infamous trail pros on it. The guy I bought it from said they were on it when he bought it 8 years ago, and the tread looks almost new. I did my research on here and read that they are practically indestructable.

    I removed the carb today, and everything was in relatively good shape. The pilot jet looked clogged, so I cleaned it out with compressed air. I'll put it on tomorrow and hopefully it will run. It also has oil injection still on it, and there is an oil light near the headlight. Should I just leave the oil injection on it? What causes them to fail when they do? I figure I could leave it on and just watch the oil light, but of course pre-mix is always the safest as long as you don't forget to mix the gas....

    Turns out it wasn't such a deal after all. I hooked it up to a compression gauge and only got 35 psi, which would leak out over a few seconds. I removed the head and found that part of the piston ring caught on the front port and wedged itself between the cylinder wall and piston. There is a huge gouge, and I'm not so sure it can be bored enough to save it. It looks like it has a .020" over piston in it already, as it says 020 on the top. It has a W stamp on the bottom- would this be a Wiseco? If I plan on rebuilding the engine, where would be a good place to look for a used cylinder? I'm not into suping these things up and making them crazy fast or anything like that, so stock parts would work just fine. I'm open for suggestions!

    Dam that's bad, I would try looking on eBay if you can't find a stock 175 cylinder there, you can always use a 77-79 Yamaha IT 175 dirt bike cylinder, cylinder head and piston the only thing is you have to use different studs to bolt it to the YT engine because the IT 175 cylinder uses longer studs to attach the cylinder to the engine.

    thats still a good deal for $60.
    i paid $100 for mine a few weeks ago.
    when you get it goin again, i would just take off the
    oil injection stuff and premix yourself. that way you
    know that its getting oil for sure.

    It's not a total loss. That cylinder could be resleeved. Not sure how much a sleeve would cost and then the cost of having the old sleeve pressed out and the new one pressed in, but it is an option. Beware of buying used parts as them may be more worn down than what you had. Some sellers don't know exactly what they have and some seller just flat out lie about the condition of the parts they have. Try posting a want ad for a yt175 cylinder on here in the classifieds section. The majority of people on here are good decent people who are an enthusiast just like you. I'd look on here before you look on ebay.

    I forgot to mention that the oil injection had been blocked off already, so I'll just remove it and pre-mix if I decide to fix it. I did notice that the dirtbike engines looked similar to my cylinder, but I am a little leary to buy one from ebay. The problem buying used is that if someone is selling the cylinder, it's probably because the engine locked up or had a problem like mine did. I noticed the first oversize piston kit is much cheaper than the second oversize. I think I saw a piston kit on ebay for ~$35, so that is a relief. I may look for a new sleeve to see if I can even find one.

    If I can get a new sleeve and have it pressed in, it will probably cost the same as buying another cylinder and getting it bored, or maybe even less. I might have a problem finding someone who can do it though. A local shop will bore cylinders for $60, which seems a little steep, but I guess isn't too bad considering the cost of labor these days.
