Can You Safely Ride W/ A Passenger On A Big Red?

Howdy,

I'm hoping a few of you BR owners could give me some pointers here. I really have been trying to teach my wife to ride a trike SAFELY. But it has gotten to the point that we both realize it isn't for her. I really would like to be able to take her along riding (she's likes the idea too) so she doesn't have to sit in camp all day. I currently own a Tri-Z and 225DR. Both of these machines simply just don't have room nor the right center of gravity (weight is far back) to ride safely / comfortably with two. So does anyone have any recommendations or experiences as such? I am pretty open to ideas: just sort of assumed the 85 BR due to its size. If it helps I'm 6'1" 210 lbs and she's 5'3" 110 lbs (I didn't say that)......

I have ridden a passenger on my old Big Red and my friends with them have safely ridden passengers also. I'm sure you know to not ride like a dummy and to keep the terrain fairly flat.

That pretty much sums it up. No hot dogging, or difficult terrain. Nice and easy and nobody gets hurt and you and wifey have fun together on the ride....

How about getting her a 4 wheeler?

Agree with 'hublake' there is one disabled trike(4wheeler) in my pack just for my wife/daughter to use as they aren't comfortable on my trikes.

The three wheeler much more than a quad requires the operator to move their body weight around to balance the machine as terrain changes..you just can't do that with someone behind you!

I have one of the nice packs that go on the rear rack that incorporates a seat for a passenger. It is great for the kids and petite adults on flat to mild terrain safely!

I've been known to let people sit on the rack facing backwards
across the field but always stay in 1st gear. Beats walking the field for the hundredth time.

More what your asking?
GF on the back facing forward, not sure where all 4 feet go but we were going prob 2nd gear on a sand trail, certainly not faster than a brisk walk, came to a wide spot in the trail, all flat and level and in an INSTANT, the trike was on it's left side, gas dripping on me, GF jammed her thumb in the ground.
We crawled out from under, tipped it back up and 4 quads came flying around the corner, slammed brakes and all 4 bumped into each other trying to stop.

It was one of those blink of an eye things.

I could guess one tire was low but that was not the case.

We're still baffled to this day.

I agree with the 4 wheeler suggestion, and this is why. In my family we have 2,3 and 4 wheels and each one fits a purpose. My son took to 2 wheels at the age of 6 and has never looked back. He is now 14 and rides a Honda xr200 and I totally trust him on it. For myself I wanted 3 wheels because that is what I grew up on and well I have just been bit by the bug at an early age and always loved them. Now on to the disabled trike or the 4 wheeler, I have 2 nephews, a boat load of my son's friends and a wife wich are not riders, but they want to come along. The 4 wheeler offers the sit and go mentallity that I don't have to always look over my shoulder wondering if everyone is safe and OK. Plus that it's electric start, racks, and a tow hitch so it makes a good work mobile around the house. In short if you are going to get your GF or wife something to ride don't get them in over their head and don't get what you want. Get what they feel safe and comfortable in and you will save a ton of headaches in the long run ;p
