    I always loved that article.

Notice the mistakes in that article- In one part it says it has Armstrong tires and in the spec sheet it says Carlisle tires. It says it uses a modified 200X gas tank, but it is a modified 1981-1982 250R tank, it also says the go kart cylinder is mated to a standard bottom end, not mention it has a close ratio gearbox, different ignition and lighter flywheel.

    Few more pics

Start off with a nice shot of Saddleback Park, this hill was my favorite part of the whole track to ride. George is in white with a bunch of factory guys ahead of and behind him. Can also see Eddie Sanders on his RM250 in this shot as well.

Pits at Fremont Raceway in 82, i forget the name of the young man in the center left with the blond hair and the PC on his jersey but he was fast and could give George a hard time on his good days. Can see the Nicholson frame CR480 in the foreground. The tall gent on the left with the glasses is our friend Robin. I still have some of my old DG gear like a yellow version of the jersey i am wearing here.

    Some updates on the Rotax

Got the swing arm and stuff off today and what a mess. Thankfully it looks like it uses all brass bushing and no needle bearings and they are all in good shape so super happy about that.

Took a week of hitting it with penetrating oil to get this sucker out. Used a air gun as a few people suggested and it slide out in the end.

@manbearpig - I honestly do not remember the build history of the CR480, if we converted it or if we gave Nick a motor to build a frame for. I do recall it was not a great fit (had to remove the fuel tank to get the spark plug out for example) and due to the weird gear spacing of the four speed tranny and how badly the bike vibrated we only raced it a few times before selling it to someone local.

#74 is George on his Nicholson XR500, I believe this race was a three hour GP held at Indian Dunes that had a dead engine start is why he did not holeshot.

That's my kind of living room! My girlfriend gets mad because my "dining room" is an rc plane shop currently, and I have decorated the walls with a flying push mower, a antique 3 wheel scooter, and a pinball machine. I eat on the patio!! Sweet pics man.

Any tips on where i can buy a tough piece of plastic to make a new chain slider from? The one Kelvin used is soft as butter and has worn through.

I did a few searches for universal chain guard and so on but everything that came up either had holes already molded in or looked to small. Would prefer black to this fugly green colored one the bike came with.

Couple shots of the engine before i get started prepping it for disassembly.

Question on the swingarm, does it fit easily into/out of the frame or did it require a little persuasion? Reason I ask, my brother had a Franks swingarm on his 86 250r and it was a tight fit. Almost didn't fit, called Franks and someone there said the honda frames are not always to spec. Just wondering.

@phantomtracer - Yes the swing arm was a very tight fit, likely everything was measured without taking into account the thickness of the powder coating added.

Still needs a more cleaning, that old chain lube does not want to come off and i am only using dish soap and a sponge on these painted parts so lots and lots of scrubbing.

can you easily dig your fingernail into it?

how thick is it? . . looks like 3/16" or 1/4".

you will need a heat gun.

@barnett468 - ill clean it up and lay it out flat so i can get some good measurements in an hour or so, i do have a good heat gun from when i used to monokote my RC airplanes. The one off the bike is just a chunk of plastic cut to fit with a notch in the middle (front) to clear the engine case and i kinda like that style so mostly just need a black piece of really tough plastic that i can fit to the swing arm.

Yes you can dig your nail in np, it is no tougher than fender plastic.
