I haven't heard of anyone running race gas in their stock engine. Now I am not saying it isn't being done, but I just don't see a benefit for running race gas in a stock engine. When you go from lets say 87 to 93 then yes you will probably see a benefit of your engine running smoother. But with stock compression in your engine, running 93 will be just as good as Race fuel. Sure the 93 will burn at a higher temperature, but that isn't going to effect your engine in a bad way.

Obviously it is your decision on what you would like to run through your engine. If you want to run race gas then go for it, you'll love the smell, lol. The only thing I'm trying to get across is the cost. If your engine runs good on XX octane of fuel, there is no point in spending $$$ on XXX octane fuel for no reason, IMO

You clearly want to run the race fuel.... so go ahead and jack up the compression already...

I caught that it was zilla related but on like page 10 or something I got the impression that someone thought all Q-racers needed it. I might have read it wrong.

Not really, but I don't want the piston to heat up and go south on me again. I don't mean ever, I know it will happen eventually, but I'd like to minimize the chance of it happening under race conditions.

    Just searching for factual information.

If you're jetted properly and your cooling system is working there is no reason for your piston to heat up and go south ever. You should easily be able to run it long enough to wear the cylinder out of tolerance before a melt down.

Alcohal(sp?) runs super cool but it takes lots more achohal to run an engine then nomal gas. IMCA modifieds all ran alcohal for years for the cooling purpose but around here all are or have switched back to gas. The gumming problems and having to run mystery oil in it for lubrication purposes makes it a pain.

Pump fuel is just fine for a stock bike... If you have an appropriate air/fuel ratio it wont ever be a problem... especially racing gncc... I never had any detonation even on sand with my stock set-up... I ran 110 for insurance in my LT after I re-chambered the head to 15:1 ... I even ran it in the woods a few times on pump fuel with no problems...

How long can you ride/race before a piston melts down on you? I agree with the others, if your jetting is correct, fuel/oil mixture is correct, getting proper air amount, and your cooling system is up to spec. There is no reason you should be heating up a piston enough to melt it, break it, etc.

Are you running a hotter plug than what is recommended? Or does your engine have a leak in it causing it to run lean.

Just seems really odd to me that you are burning up a piston during racing...

He isnt... its only happened once and he bought the bike in an unknown condition... He is just wanting to take precaution so not to jeopardize a race..

    Yeah, that's it.

BTW, my machine shop guy called yesterday and my cylinder is ready and he has me a Pro-X one ring racing piston. I'm ansious to get it back together so I can start the break-in process this weekend. I have a race in two weeks and I'd like to have 15 or so good hours on it before then.

After the first half hour it will be broke in. Are you good at dailing in a carb or are you getting help with this?

I usually am okay, but err on the rich side of perfect for obvious reasons. I guess I'm reluctant to go leaner if it's not breaking up through the whole throttle, esp the top end, even though I usually have a darker plug than most would like. I'm usually happy like that. I have tried to go leaner a couple times and thought I'd gone too lean in a hurry with minor changes so I stay rich.
