    origin of term "air fooler"

Where does the term "air fooler" or "air fooled" come from?

I mean, Obviously it has to do with the fact that it's an air cooled 250r but beyond that, what's the origin of the term? I did a search and didn't find anything.

I'm guessing that it is a bastardised (stuffed up) version of the word foiler, which has come from an accidental variation (or departure) of Air foils, refering to the Air cooling fins on the barrel and head.

I believe when that word probably came out was when the newer 85-86 water cooled 250R's came out. There needed to be some term or wording to show which model you might be referring to. Most call the 85-86 a waterpumper and then the name air cooled was out. Later, I am sure someone changed it to fooler, as they have some serious power for an air cooled motor.

Air fooler pertains to any 2 stroke air cooled bike or trike. Not just the 250R It was a term coined by the racers basically to pick on the other riders that still rode air cooled engines after the liquide cooled engines were introduced and proved so much better. They were "fools" for trying to compete with the new liquid cooled machines thus the term, they were air "foolers" then the term just stuck to the bikes themselves. Now days it is not particularly a bad thing to have an 'air fooler" but back then if you wanted to compete on the circuit you were a fool to use an air coole 2 stroke against the liquid cooled machines.

Trikeaholic - speaking of your race i have heard that while 85-86 r's are faster from the factory, an air fooler with a bit of work done is nothing to joke about. granted i dont have one yet** but i can only dream til then

Were you at TF08. 1upfront had a couple of his s there. I think that he fooled a lot of people there with them. It is really funny when we go to a new track to drag race and you here people chuckle and talk about how easy it would be to beat that old threewheeler. After they've had there ass handed to them they come over and look at it a little closer and if they are good sports they ask things like "is that a 500?" and if they are nice guys they say "that thing kicks ass". They were fooled by the old trike.

It may or may not be. 1upfront was eliminated in the 250 stock class at Tf by tecat-z on his well tuned tecate. That was one of two times that I saw him lose on that machine there. The other was to Raffa on his tri-z. He and Raffa raced three times that night, Raffa won the first one and 1upfront won the next two. However 1upfront's 300r did beat tecat-z in a practice round but being a 300 it ran in the mod class.
