    Cost to rebuild my 200X motor?

    Alright guys, I'm debating what project to start next, my T3 or 200X, and was wondering what is the most I could pay to rebuild my '85 200X motor? And I mean the worst case scenario... top end completely shot, price to have kicker gears fixed/replaced, common bottom end bearings that go bad, etc. Now, I don't have this motor apart yet, so I don't know what to expect, but just from riding it, I know that I need a cam chain, tensioner, and guide, rings, (probably a piston too) gaskets, valve work and an exhaust. Also, there's a 200X motor on eBay for $250 + $70 shipping that is claimed to not smoke. Would that be a reasonable alternative? Thanks in advance!

    It would be nice to just go with the replacment, but it could have issues of its own. I have ~$250 into a cylinder bore, Wiseco, new oil pump and timing chain/guides.

    Yeah, I have no way of knowing. There's another one on eBay as well, and he has a short vid of it running. It seems like a nice motor, but its an actual auction and don't know how high it would go. Here are the motors in question:

    OK guys, I just pulled the stator cover on the X, and there's like an 1/8 inch of endplay in the crank, so I've decided that this engine is a lost cause. In fact, the entire bike is probably not worth it, but it has sentimental value so, if anybody has a motor that fits the 200X they'll let go cheap, please make me an offer! 200, 185, whatever! Please somebody give me a break, I'm desperate!

    could be something small. I'd rebuild it or have a shop do it. nothing better than the power of a rebuilt motor. or take off the front forks and put it on the 81 250r... lol

    Yep, and I like knowing that the motor is rebuilt... peace of mind so to speak. I'd do it myself for that reason, as well as it would be cheaper.

    Putting the front end on the R has crossed my mind more than once lol. I like having them separate though, as I like to putt around once in a awhile. I just dunno what to do... definitely be cheaper and easier to get the T3 up and running, but I haven't ridden it yet, and if I had to put a bunch of money into one, it would be the X, as I've ridden and LOVE it, and not the T3, which I have no idea what to expect the first time I take it for a spin... I just don't know how much it'll be to put the X right... it just needs so much!

    To me, unknown EBAY motors are not worth the gamble. Just look at some of the "mechanics" we have here

    A crate motor I will buy though......

    I personally love to build my own motors, but I leave the porting and other precision work to guys better qualified with more knowledge and experience than asscrasher

    Tear it down and see what you've got. Those <85 200X parts are sooooooo plentiful that I'd imagine for about 500&#37; you could build a nice tight and fresh reliable motor with both new and used components.

    F the shop, read up, ask questions and do it yourself. Shops are >85$ an hour and filled with 20yo "mechanics" that can't take the time to do a great job when the boss is all over them about the time.

    Once again DC, I completely agree with you. I'm a younger guy, I like to get my hands dirty. I've never had an X apart, but looking at the shop manual, It looks like an extremely simple motor. I would definitely "outsource" the head and kicker gears though... I'm no machinist. Anybody work with this guy on eBay for head rebuilds?

    Obviously that's the wrong head, but he says he'll rebuild one you send in. It seems like an awfully hard price to beat.
