RI Machine Shop / Recommend Bore Size

Can anyone recommend a good machine shop in the RI area where I can get a cylinder honed or bored?

I am in the process of rebuilding a 250SX. The existing piston appears to be under the service tolerance specified in the service manual. The cylinder needs to be honed or bored. In my mind this is a perfect excuse to purchase an over bore piston kit!!! Assuming a 0.010” over bore kit will satisfy the specified tolerance, regardless of honing or boring the cylinder, would I gain much more power if I were to use a 0.020” or 0.040” kit? The prices of the kits are all the same. Obviously one kit would require more boring than the others. Would I be better off starting with the smaller over bore kit so I have the ability to upgrade to the next kit if the cylinder needed to be bored again in the future?

Also, does anyone have experience with the WSM over bore piston kits? Is WSM a reliable manufacturer?

You could bore it .080 over and you wouldn't be able to tell the difference. The rule of thumb is to go the least amount necessary to clean the bore. .010 should do just fine. You may or may not be able to get away with just a hone. The machinist will tell you that when he sees it. I do not have anyone to recommend, I'm sorry. Keep your eyes open in the local riding section for when we get together for rides brah.

you won't gain power unless you go much larger with higher compression. I have a very special 1 off pisotn. it's 2mm overbore (.080 over) and it's also a high compression piston. about a 11-11.5:1 compression. that would give you a lot more power. you would have to run a performance exhaust and larger carb. Let me know if your interested. pm me.

It's a bottle hone. I've never seen a wheel cylinder the size of a 250cc jug.

Thanks for the input. I talked to a local machine shop today that can bore the cylinder for $60. The guy mentioned that he cannot bore a nickel plated cylinder. I assume the 250sx is not nickel plated. Just for future reference, how can I determine if a cylinder is nickel plated?

oscarmayer - thanks for the offer, but I'm trying to keep it simple. For the time being I'm not looking to upgrade the exhaust or carb. Maybe a future project!
