84 atc 110 ski attachment project

hey guys figured i would post up my ski project i did last year for my 110.
last spring for my senior mechanical design project, i was tasked with designing and building something that would improve upon something that already exsists. so i had been wanting to build a ski attachment for my trike, so i figured this would be good for this project.

so i started out sketching and then modeling some ideas on the computer using SolidWorks 3D CAD software. once i came to my final design i then got all the materials (snowmobile ski and front axle from a 110 off ebay, and some rectangular steel tubing and some scrap metal i had laying around my house) and set to work. i wish i had more photos of the build process but this is what i have.

here i am mocking up the ski:

here is the finished product, loaded up in my truck to go to school to make a presentation:

and here is the first attampt at testing after the first snowfall:

i say attempt because i could get the damn thing started to test it for the first time, turns out when i took the carb off, one of the choke blade screw was gone, so i looked all around and and then took the intake manifold off and sure enough there it was, lodged in the intake valve. so i ripped the top end apart and rebuilt it which took all winter and didnt get it running again until april of this year, so needless to say i havent been able to test it accept pushing it back into my barn.. so now i cant wait for the snow to fly this year to test it out.

let me know what you guys think!

sweet, I was thinking about doing that for my dx, you just inspired me. I saw a pic of a 200x with skis yesterday. That is my goal in the next couple years, a 200x or 350x with tracks and a ski. Cheap mans snow machine probably a lot funner as well

I saw someone else do this before on a trike. It was a pic in his sig.
And they do make tracks for atv/utv but they are super expensive.

thanks guys! yea i cant wait to try it out. i want to make my own tracks as well, i was thinking of trying to use the tracks off of a snowblower or something like that. but they are also fairly expensive, but i am keeping my eyes peeled on craigslist for a set.

Nice job on the ski! I'm thinking of using a spade blade for a shorter and wider stance. I'll put two carbides on so it will grip while turning.

That's actually who I was referring to in my precious post. Couldn't think of his name.
It's quite funny though, your building something like this and you think wow, who else would ever do it? Turns out to be like a handful of people.

thanks guys for the feedback, i will keep this updated when i get to doing tracks, but i probably wont be for a while, i want to see how it handles snow with just the ski

that is actually the thread that gave me the idea for snowblower tracks

that is cool, i knew i saw a couple around that had home-made skis, and these things dont handle deep snow very well, so i figured it would be a good senior project

that's sweet. I was considering making one for my 200x. then cutting up an old snowmobile track and wrapping them around the wheels on the back

See the thing is he was using snow blower tracks on a 70. This is a little bit bigger and I feel the tracks would be too small for it. Your clearance would then drop to like 1".
