When I first saw the CanAm Spyder at an ATV event (2007) I told the salesman to put some knobs on it and let me take if for a spin around the MX track before I would consider buying one. We both had a good laugh and I moved on to the next vendor. After that I always wondered how one would work offroad. It would probably handle like a Quad.
Do you mean something like this?

you can find video of the one beets posted on youtube. The vids I seen were all street riding though
Here's the article.
I actually had/have the aspirations to build one based on a TRX250R with a FatCat swinger. I got all the parts plus the disc brake for the rear and started but ran out of time. A Missile kit would be easier to adapt because the swinger is quite a bit wider that the fat cat swinger, I remember that much.

I'm really surprised at the interest in this configuration. I can see the interest in the Can Am on the street. I've never ridden one, but you can clearly see it works.
I personally think this configuration would really suck in the dirt. I don't see what all the interest is.

What about doing it with a 4x4 4 wheeler, making a 3 wheel drive, then put a really wide tire (or maybe 2 sandwitched together) on the rear?
I too fail to see a practical reason for building something like this, unless just to be different.

I wouldn't wanna waste my 400ex or cut up a 250r or anything, or waste a coveted missile kit, but if one could be tossed 2gether with spare parts and a turd 250x or 300ex on the cheap, id be game. Mostly cuz I don't have one and neither do my buddies. I don't think I would want one for my primary trail rider but if I could fire it up every once n a whle and make a couple hot laps down the driveway 2 impress my friends.....that would be my intentions.
