WTF am i doing wrong? GD recoil spring!

OK, i've searched all the threads on this subject..... i've been trying the two-nail-on-a-board trick, every time i get it wound and clamp vise grips on it the spring uncoils before i can get it into the housing! I also tried slowly winding it into the housing, well that's not working either! I've thrown a wrench 20 times and invented some cuss words i didn't even know i was capable of.....any advice before i hurt myself or someody else?

yeah, gloves and no phones or distractions.
The first one can take days and there are some people on here can go thru them in 10 minutes.

I think I tied mine with dental floss in a few different spots while coiling it up and then cut the floss when
    it was in the case.
Just don't get slammed by a flying spring.
Stitches are cheap but installation is too expensive.

Walk away,,which you already did. Either take it to a shop or,,clean it spotless,,gas,,degreaser, whatever. Wear some latex gloves,,I have never in my 24 years used the jigs or nails,,I use my claws,,take your time,,wish for a LOT of luck putting it in. And walk away if you lose it again! There are no "good ways" of doing these,,they suck. Good luck,,deep breaths!
Please help those who cannot help themselves.

I went through the same pain and frustration and tool tossing and everything.

For me, the easiest way to get them back in is with a good pair of work gloves on my hands and just coiling it back into the recoil case, starting where it clips to the cover at the outer edge. One hand feeding spring in, the other holding hte spring in place along the opposite side.

I ain't gonna lie - it was a b$&*^. I must've worked on it for 4 hours straight before I got so pissed I walked away.

I came back the next day and had it coiled up in less than 20 minutes. Once I got pissed and tired the first day (my hands got really worn out) there was no way it was going to get done.

Key word to a recoil (PATIENTS) I've fixed recoils on snowmobiles, ice augers, lawn-mowers they all are the same. Take your time and make it work. My dad says you can heat it, you can beat on it, and you can swear at it, or you can just take your time and figure it out. Most of the time if you take your time and think about what your doing you will avoid a lot of trouble.

You can take it to a dealer and see what they charge to rewind it or you can send it to me for the cost of shipping both ways, I will do it for free, plus if you include all the parts I will set it up for you. The only thing that gives me troubles is the decompression cable I set one up once, but have never been able to repeat the process lol.

it takes 5min. no need for jigs or anything. Its kind of hard to explain but I will try. I start the spring in the recoil once I have the spring coiled around 1 time, I use my left hand (just fingertips) to hold the spring down and spin the recoil as I feed the spring in with my right hand. I hope this makes some kind of sense to you. I can do it in about 3 minutes but it usaully takes twice as long because I always seem to wind it backwards the first time

Yea don`t ya hate when you get all done and then find out you wound it backwards .Counts as practice anyway. It gets easier after you do it a few times patience is key and a good thick pair of gloves.

Get it nice and dry and take your time holding it in place.

I won't say it's "easy" but you just have to think about which portion will pop out if it's not held in correctly.

If you just try and do it without thinking about and following instructions, you will fail.......

If you don't it will go "BOING" just like a young teenager when he wakes up

WORST thing to do is this. in my opinion i would rather rebuild a 2-stroke engine than this. usualy takes me 3 tries. first time i put it in backwards, wait 5 min looking at it to make sure i get it in right. second time backwards, 3rd time after remebering which way it doesnt go, i get it lol. i dont deal with them anymore just bring them to my mechanic and he does for free

My all time least favorite job to do is rewinding a recoil. Usually takes at least one "walk away" for me.

I've done a couple using the nails in the workbench method. I clamp it with Vice Grips to hold it until I can get it into the housing. The key is to get it wound super tight to make it as small as possible so it will fit easily. It still sucks though and sometimes my hands cramp up doing it lol

Nail in workbench. Power screwdriver to wind it for you. Have 2 thin zip ties underneath it as you wind and pull them tight. Put in housing and cut zip ties. Really easy if you take your time.
