    Keihin main jet "baffle"?

I took the Keihin carb apart from my 84 200x and I see a small plastic bell shaped piece that looks like a baffle over the main jet. Is that what it is? I'm thinking its for off road carbs to prevent fuel slosh.

It seems to just slide over the main jet's pedastal and be lightly retained by its grip, and not slide down further because of the float bowl.

A parts diagram calls it "holder, jet". Huh?

Curious what this part is, and if there's anything special about putting it back on. It will likely slide down until it is stopped by the float bowl. Is that correct?

It's there to keep fuel isolated around your main jet to prevent you guessed it, "sloshing."

Despite finding it on the bottom of the float bowl when I opened up the carb, I'm certain I now have it back where it belongs. The pictures in the shop manual are not very clear, but it seems the flair would be to the bottom, and the little cutout would line up with the overflow tube. The carb is squeaky clean, inside and out. I'm not firing it up again until I get a fuel strainer for my petcock. I'm hoping my problems were related to dirt, possibly under the float valve or in the petcock itself.

Sounds like you have it on there correctly.

I've never seen one of those little baffles on an atv or motorcycle carb before, and it left me tossing and turning at night, worrying about not having it on right. I've seen quite a few motorcycle carbs, and some atv carbs and none of them had it. Did a search for keihin carb diagrams, and the modern one's don't have it. I used to have a Mikuni Carburetor book that was very detailed, but nothing on Keihins.

It really only fits one way, with the flared side facing down and the cutout for that little pipe sticking up from the bottom of the bowl.

Hit some whoops or bumpy terrain at a decent speed and you'll have the motor stuttering.

Lately, with a few different trikes to get/keep running, I just get a foot or so of some blue yellow clear fuelline and let it droop into a figure 8 from the tank to the carb.

Residual crud lays in the bottom of the loop and this stuff is so cool, youdont need clamps.

If you see crud? pull it off, let it drain the muck out of the line and slip it back on till you get more the next day.

You can even put a filter behind it. Acts like a sediment bowl and saves multiple filter changes when yer trying to flush a a tank.

DrJoe, did you get that clear fuel line at a motorcycle shop, or do they carry it at automotive parts stores too?

That's good to know. Mine did it once after a jump, bogged like it wouldn't go up the hill at all. Didn't mess with it since it never did it again but I had been going over the jump slower. I knew fuel sloshing was the problem, just didn't know part of my carb might be missing.

    I doubt it.

Back in 86 I took the one out of my 85 200x and it never acted up and it was BEAT on.

I'm really surprised any of those things are still around.

I couldn't find a similar baffle on any other Keihin carb, definately never saw one on any street bike carb I took apart, nor on my Yamaha Grizzly atv. Anyhow, it will stay there, as intended. Took me a little while to be confident I had it back where it belonged.

I'll borrow that idea about the figure 8 of fuel line and picked up some proper line at a motorcycle shop today, along with an inline filter. I'm still toying with the idea of trying a Mikuni, but there's lots of other places to spend money on my machine. Will see how this works first.

I guess it's totally unnecessary then. Keihin didn't know what they were doing and wasted time and money to put it there.
