1985 atc 250 sx motor removal / pivot bolt

Soooo. I am having two/three major problems with this three wheeler and I’m hoping that I can get some good help.

When I was taking the exhaust apart one of the bolts that bolt the front of the exhaust to the motor snapped in half. This bolt is reverse threaded into the front of the motor, correct? I have tried to get it out with vise grips but it didn’t budge. Any suggestions??

I would assume that I would have to take the motor out so that I can get a better grip on it. If that doesn’t work then I suppose I would get a shop to drill it out and re-tap it.

If I take the motor out, I come to my second problem, the shaft drive. To get the motor out I need to detach the shaft drive from the motor. How do I do this? Do I need to take the pivot bolt out, rear shock, rear wheels, etc.? I am stumped.

If I do need to take the swing arm out to remove the motor, any suggestions on how to get the pivot bolt out? That bolt is stubborn.

wow thanks alot for that manual.

It seems that i do not need to take the entire swing arm out to be able to remove the motor. that's awsome.

Hmm. in that manual is says to just "disconnect the universal joint". is there anything tricky about that?

Not really. It just kinds of slides out when you pull the motor to the side. Now getting the shaft back in there is the tricky part. I spent a lot of time on that. It would be super close to going in and would get stuck lol. Very frustrating

Whew that is such a relief.

I have another easy question for you guys, the seat/fender. How does it connect to the frame? The end of the fender is easy to clamp down to the frame. It has that hook looking thing that connects to the frame when you move the lever. The front of the (rear) fender also has a... lever looking thing (with loops on it) but I can’t figure out where to clamp it down.

The engine slides out the right hand side. Just takes the mounts and pegs off and slide the boot back for the shaft drive. It should go right back in with ease. My driveshaft was stuck when I tried to get the engine out so it took an half hour to disconnect that. took less then 5 minutes to get it back it and bolted in place.

Wow, you guys make it sound so easy. So does the manual. I removed all the mounting bolts but can't get the engine high enough to get over the front lower hanger tabs. Lifting engine just a little, the head hits the top/bottom of the frame.

    What is the trick?

Off the OP's topic...but on the 2nd gen Rs, don't you have to remove the swinger pivot bolt to remove the engine?

Ended up removing the valve cover as there was no way it was getting past the lower tab. Came out with ease.
