Bill, I'm from Missouri and our state motto is "The Show-Me State" and to quote Hugh Roland from the show Ice Road Truckers, "Talk is cheap and wiskey cost money" so until I see them I'll just continue to say "what I've seen is what I know." And as far as I know the two above are the only examples out there along with the '87 Tecate that Kawasaki built during their 25th anniversary deal, to me the rest is hear say. I'm humbly waiting to be told "I told you so."
Call me a skeptic, pessimist, glass half empty kind of guy, I just find it hard to believe this day and age a simple picture that reveals nothing other then they exist would be out of the question. Not calling you a liar but until I lay eyes on them or am shown concrete proof I'll remain a skeptic.

Why the '85 big red of all bikes? I mean why would someone keep a hold of the 2nd best selling and produced trike of all time behind the '84 200es. Seeing how they made them two more years after 1985 (three if you count the 88 overseas model) you would think they would have all been assembled and sold. I could see a one purpose sport model like the 86'250r that really didn't sell very well towards the end, but the workhorse flagship of Honda in 1985 not being sold and not one but two of them. Just seems crazy to me. Like I said I am Humbly waiting to be proved wrong and for the sake of the sport I hope to see the day that more pop up.
I also find it crazy that with times being what they are and seeing the stir that Andy's 250r brought, that if there were more of these out there they didn't start popping up for sale after the 250r went up on ebay the first time. I mean they all can't be owned by billionaires who wipe their as$es with hundred dollar bills and money means nothing to them?
Now that being said do I think they are still out there? Yes I do think there are a few floating around and are owned by guys who have absolutely no clue what they have and are out of touch with the current niche craze going on. They might also have been left behind by a deceased relative who never informed the surviving family as to what the hell it is and its piled underneath a bunch of crap. But I think the ones that are out there and the current owner knows exactly what they have and refuse to let it see the light of day are slim to none. Just my .02
If your on this website you know the craze and $$$$ that these items bring so if you claim to know someone with a crated bike you have told them the $$$$ they bring and kids contrary what people tell you its always about the $$$$. I find it hard to believe that someone who was informed about the rarity and value of their item would refuse to share it in the least little bit. But again this is solely my opinion.

Aside from all the "do they exist or do they not" issue... I can't help but daydreamabout having such a cool piece of history! I still don't know if I would uncrate it at all, assemble it and put it on display never to ride it, or assemble it and ride. What a Christmas present that would be indeed!!!
What did the crated R end up selling for anyway? Anyone know off the top of their head??

Before or after Ebay fees? I think $30000,,before. I offered him $27000,,He made out a little better on Ebay. And I do not know, nor have I asked, who bought it. I think he wanted it quiet, and I understand that. Didn't mean to fire you up Bryan! I have not seen these,,but I have a decent instinct,,I know of collections, and have pics,,that would make some here pass out,,,Seriously,,break out into a sweat and just Rattle their minds for DAYS. Some stop in here,,Most don't. One doesn't own a computer. Let me ask you this.. How many customers of VMS do you know? Me neither. There are HUNDREDS of nutso enthusiats like me out there,,,,that just happen,,,get ready,, to not post on the internet. Are there crated 3 wheelers left? Absolutely

Someone needs to throw a tarp over that Z. If you are preserving it for posterity it only makes sense to protect it.
Wow,you're not kidding. I hadn't clicked on the pic till now,,,she is Filthy! I understand not wanting to wash it depending on it's climate. But I would and soak her down with preservative.

I'm not fired up, just more thinking out loud. I often wonder about these things and this is some of the thoughts I've had. I truly hope that I am proven wrong and more of them pop up and with todays rapid spreading social media its only a matter of time that if they are out there, they will surface. I just find it hard to believe that not a single one has surfaced since Andy's 250r. There has to be someone out there if they truly do exist that could use the extra 15-40 thousand dollars. I mean if you add up all the claims over the years of guys claiming to know someone with a crated bike there should be at least 15-25 of them collecting dust and hidden from inquiring minds.
